The "Vang Chu" Epidemic...

(C) 1997 Richard Seymour

According to Vietnamese government officials, it has only worsen. In Vietnam, the "Vang Chu" epidemic have already spread to an estimated 300,000 Hmongs, one of it's many ethnic minorities. The reason for this spread is believed to be contributed by foreigners, especially white American missionary workers. At the moment, the only treatments that are offered by the communist government of Vietnam are:

1. torture; extreme cruel punishments
2. irreasonable imprisonments
3. beatings that results in a slow and painful death, which is even a recommended treatment for young Hmong children who are infected with "Vang Chu."

So, the "Vang Chu" epidemic, what is it? Unlike all other epidemic, this is one in which you should consider catching. Whether you call him Vang Chu or God, the Christian faith is a faith that touches the lives of billions, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.

The question is, WHY are the HMONG Christians in Vietnam being persecuted for believing in God? Is it because they have learned to love their families? Is it because they now refuse to drink and fall into drunkiness? It is because they are now better as a people? Yes. It's true. For these reasons the Vietnamese government are spraying chemical agents on Hmong villages. For this reason the Vietnamese government are forcing Hmong Christians to denounce their faith or face harse imprisonment. For this reason the Vietnamese government massacres those who refuse to denouce their faith in Vang Chu, God. Not even the little children are spared.

As I read about their plight to remain Christians, I am awed. Their bravery and loyalty to God makes me tremble in my very seat. They are an inspiration to me. To the Hmong Christians of Vietnam, you are not alone...and your suffering will not be in vain:

"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you." -Matthews 5:11-12

I would like to encourage the international community both Christian and non-Christian to intervene with the massacres of the Hmong Christians in Vietnam. I would also like to encourage the Hmong Christians and non-Christians to raise awareness on this issue and also take actions against these vicious acts by the Vietnamese government. As different as we are, we all share a common idealology: the desire of freedom. And Hmong means, to be free.

Peb Hmoob yog ib tsev neeg.
